JON JOHNSON When Sandy Jones retired after 26 years as Parks and Recreation Director in Eufaula in 2005 and moved to Dothan, he figured his days of serving as Commissioner/CEO of Dixie Boys Baseball were over.
When Jones was first approached about being the commissioner in 1995, he was humbled to say the least. Jones had gained a strong reputation for putting on quality tournaments in Eufaula and Dixie officials took note. Jones is quick to point out overseeing DBB is much more than just putting on tournaments and answering questions.
“We’re a member organization of USA Baseball, so we fell under their rules and regulations,” Jones said. “I wrote what ended up being basically 20 pages of a child protection plan. It’s part of Safe Sport Act. Everyone has to submit to a background check.” “There are some frustrations at times because I’m seeing myself doing a whole lot more than just the baseball side of it,” Jones said. “I love baseball. Being at the ballpark is what I love.”
