Students from across Alaska traveled to Anchorage this weekend to compete in the statewide Inupiaq and Yup’ik spelling Bee for Beginners contest. Twenty-one students battled it out in the Yup’ik section of the competition, and two students from Sitka went head-to-head during the Inupiaq section.
Before making it to Saturday’s final round of competition, students competed in both school and district competitions in order to qualify for state. In total, six district were represented on Saturday. Coltrane Chase, who is studying the Yup’ik language at University of Alaska Fairbanks, says this event helps revitalize the language and that it is never too late to start learning the language.
