Faith Ringgold , whose powerful quilt paintings and mixed-media works stitched together a rich patchwork of intricate—and often provocative—narratives around the subjects of race, gender, and Black life in America, has died at the age of 93.
A centerpiece of the cycle, American People Series #20: Die , was inspired in part by Pablo Picasso’s famous anti-war painting Guernica and two-panel tableau that depicted an eerie scene of carnage, death, and chaos punctuated by two children clinging desperately to one another in fear. The content of Ringgold’s work could be trenchant and even incendiary, but sometimes stood in contrast to its form.
