Chicago teachers to strike in nation's 3rd largest district

During the 2012 strike, the district kept some schools open for half days during a seven-day walkout. District officials said this time they will keep all buildings open during school hours, staffed by principals and employees who usually work in administrative roles. “We have parents, who if they don’t go to work, they don’t get paid,” Jackson said. “So, we need to make sure that there is a place for their children to go so that they can continue doing what they need to do to support their families.”

“CPS’ current class size offer falls far short of what’s needed to address the sweeping scale of the problem,” they said in a statement. “To say that you have offered a proposal that respects what we are asking for, to say you’ve bent over backward .... it’s absolutely ridiculous,” Davis Gates said.

Funny every time the schools/teachers/ coaches say it’s about the kids, we are here for the kids, we have to first; think about the kids. Until it affects their pocket book then we see the real reason they’re there.

Usually the insensitive people can't understand what a public school teacher endures because they can afford to send their kid(s) to private schools. Teachers should be well compensated, not underpaid and overworked.

For unions to sacrifice educational opportunities for these children/caregiving as a negotiation tool is ethically and morally wrong. It makes me sick.

Does that mean the teachers will also be docked in their pay? It should. Other unions are not allowed to go on strike because it will disrupt service to the community they serve. They are allowed to go on strike during their lunch break. Bargaining will go on.

I HATE headlines like this - as if the inconvenience of working parents is the only thing that matters. What about the systematic devaluing and dismantling of the public education system? As a parent and former teacher I stand in solidarity with striking teachers. RedForEd
