New research has found few links between in-person K-12 schooling and coronavirus case rates around the world. 'The data so far are not indicating that schools are a superspreader site,' says an infectious disease specialist at the University of Michigan.

of coronavirus cases started before the school year began in September. Still, cases in one region dropped three weeks after schools reopened, while others continued rising at the same rate as before, and one stayed flat.

"We are not sure that the environments of the schools may not have a small and systematic effect," said Álvarez,"But it's pretty clear that they don't have very major epidemic-changing effects, at least in Spain, with the measures that are being taken in Spain."ventilation, keeping students in small groups or"bubbles," and social distancing of 1.5 meters — slightly less than the recommended 6 feet in the United States.

Some countries, such as Thailand and South Africa, fully opened when cases were low, with no apparent impact on transmission. Others, such as Vietnam and Gambia, had cases rising during summer break, yet those rates actually dropped after schools reopened. Japan, too, saw cases rise, and then fall again, all while schools were fully reopened. But the United Kingdom saw a strong upward trend that started around the time of reopening schools.

"Where you see cases on the rise in a neighborhood, in a county, we see that tend to be reflected in a school," Dickson said."[But] we're not seeing spread by virtue of being in school together."

UnsilencedSci NEW research? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

megynkelly

No

My states in red, our county is in red. However they are still doing in person classes for those who choose to attend. Luckily I choose “at home “ learning or we would all be quarantined for 14 days bc there’s a + case in her class!!! Ugh! 🤦‍♀️

Please read Haertz publication out yesterday. Kids are super spreaders.

karenvaites APSVirginia Please send back the students and teachers who want to teach and learn in person!

Here ya go marty_walsh

It’s because schools have been cautious, have a plan, and are following all health protocols. It’s the adults having house parties, rallies, and refusing to wear masks that are preventing us from safely moving forward.

The private schools around here have been full-time in person since August, and handling the very few random cases wonderfully! They really are doing the best they can.

This article is based on so little information. No other country has mishandled COVD like we have. Very few schools in major cities are already open. And the clickbait headline to boot. This is not good journalism or what we expect from NPR.

Just in from Michigan.

megynkelly My daughter has been in public school 5 days a week for 9 weeks here in Georgia. You could have asked large portions of the USA a month ago and received the same answer, but that doesn’t fit the teampanic narrative. Kids (most) should be in school. We’ve known this all along...

University of Michigan huh? Funny considering recent news. Lol!

A UofM spokesperson? The school that just shut down?

SCIENCE DENIERS!!!!

Buuut how is their learning impacted?

Who could have predicted this?

Open the schools up already. Open them up.

megynkelly But let’s keep isolated and at home unsupervised staring at a small screen for 6+ hours per day.

My kids have been going to school in person since July 15. It’s a private school. 300 kids on campus plus teachers. Small two story square block building. We have 3 kids in two separate campuses (elementary and -Middle/HS). Not one case reported or class cancelled. Not one.

Lockdowns ad infinitum.

This is a horrible study. It only involves 14 days after the start of school. It takes closer to 4 weeks to start noticing a change in infection rate, given the incubation time and R0.

megynkelly Yes. Let’s end this.

megynkelly Didn’t we all know this before school opened?

ArturoGuajardo I'm at the epicenter of it in the country. When there are over 500 new cases a day, we need to remain cautious and diligent.

It’s not schools that are a threat to communities, it’s the communities that are a threat to schools.

How about all the precautions we’re taking ? Duh, this is so ridiculous— nowhere is as stringent as it is in school for me each day.

luismen1991 I've been teaching a full class since Sept 1. (Fr) My colleagues and I were just discussing how the kids don't even have runny noses this year...we wash our hands, doors, desks, etc. all day long.

GovInslee chrisreykdal

The UofM is in a two week lockdown because of surging covid on campus

If the entire country had worn masks in April & May, America would be open right now. But alas Fox News & no national leadership.

Few people have died walking a tight rope across an active volcano lava pit. There, there is no real link between walking a tight rope across an active volcano lava pit, and death by being melted in the lava.

That’s because we are wearing masks and practicing social distancing! Without precautions, schools ARE super spreaders! Just come visit during flu and stomach bug seasons/times! 😷🤧🤮teacher

You don’t say.

Hell yes it’s exaggerated!! Long term effects are far worse than Covid. Period.

The University of Michigan had to order a two week shelter in place today because their reopening didn't work and infections surged. irony

GeoRebekah Perhaps you can give some insight to these people on this subject.

oops we ruined everyone’s lives for no reason

Then your headline is irresponsible.

HiCaliberLilGal TGonzalesMPH telling you this for months, same to you ThompsonR2J

We’re still in an *It seems to effect Regions, It Travels by Air but CDC Won’t Admit then Does, Do Wear A Mask Because It Performs Some Sort of witchcraftery Jiu Jitzsu on COVID * phase. So, why not risk it?..

'These safety measures include mask-wearing for all children older than 6, ventilation, keeping students in small groups or 'bubbles,' and social distancing of 1.5 meters' So is the US doing school like Spain?

I hope it’s right. My grandkids started back 2 days a week, now I’m afraid to see them.

johndurant Yes only right leaning political events are duh

Very cautious optimism. Now please start pressing teacher unions to open schools. What are they doing to our children is unforgettable.

Careful . This is not your usual Liberal tilt.

megynkelly We knew that already. Open up!!

The answer the the headline is yes. Parents out of fear sacrificed their child’s education and health.

NPR is not an honest purveyor of science. Too political. Research has shown children without comorbidities are not at risk.

Not exaggerated. If opened and operated normally it would have been a disaster. It is the limited number of students and reliable use of masks, distance, and sanitation that is to thank.

This is irresponsible bullshirt and you know it.

We've known this since March. Kids don't seem to get this, or spread it very much. That is a GOOD THING! Sweden and others used this data to keep their schools 100% OPEN, no masks, no crazy sanitization regimes, etc. And schools have since had LOWER infection %. FactsOverFear

Duh

we knew this months ago thanks to numerous studies all over europe. stop reinventing the wheel.

wesyang This info was available in June in European outlets. Medically this was recognized by summer in many parts of world. Info was withheld in the United states and scare tactics pushed instead ( July, August). Why NPR? Why now?

The same University of Michigan that is currently locked down due to out of control infection rates?

No shit. Welcome to March

Yes

I think the headline is misleading. Reopening can be done but with many precautions. We can’t just cram 36 massless kids back into poorly ventilated classrooms and expect no issues. That’s clear from the article as well.

Patriotic hardworking Americans are voting for the People’s President realDonaldTrump NOT the lying radical hateful corrupt Democrats that are trying to destroy our country! VeteransForTrump womenfortrump Women4Trump VoteRed2020 vote TrumpPence2020 2020Election

We are k-6 and have had 7 teachers and staff out and several students. Just what til sniffle season.

The hyperbole is in the “super spreader” terminology. How about some stats on how many grandparents were killed by kids who got Covid at school? How many teachers? Children infect basically at the same rates as everyone else. How amazingly profound.

*cough* world wide would imply the rest of the world where they are actually taking this and safety vaguely seriously?

megynkelly

Someone please tell the teachers unions.

I need NPR to stop pushing this narrative. We don’t have widespread testing in place in order to catch asymptomatic infections which are common in the K-12 age range. They then go home to people who are NOT in that age range, also multiple teachers have died here from covid.

You idiots.

megynkelly Trump was right, right?

megynkelly 'Superspreader' - is that in conjunction with masturbation like Fisting..?

Another one NJGov GovMurphy

'we created a late stage capitalism environment that would have completely collapsed if we couldnt get people, who we treat as statistics, back to work. less than 60 days is probably enough time to put out a report saying schools are safe, right?' yall can suck my dick

megynkelly More fake news

I get a recorded phone call from my kid’s high school every day of Covid cases. It’s the same message “we’re confident it’s under control” yet they still only ‘recommend’ masks. Glad we decided to do online learning.

Were they exaggerated or unknown?

That data was available in May from other countries.

It was an unknown among a new, highly infectious disease. That is not an over exaggeration!

Around the World they wear mask, especially Asia Pacific where business is slowly going back to normal.

CUNY “Hold my beer...”

No shit, Sherlock. Rand Paul has been saying this for moths but nobody's gonna listen to him.

megynkelly CBCNews CityCynthia

megynkelly Can't believe that liberal NPR would report such lies! LOL Then maybe if this liberal source did report it maybe it is true?!?! Will the rest of the MSM pick up on this story? Guess we will see. If they don't then it will be a lie because no one else picked it up.

My child gets to go in person 2-3 days/week. They keep the class sizes small (6), everyone wears masks, and they social distance. No cases that i know of at this point! I’m glad our school at least gives us that option!

Better safe than sorry

Well then explain why Boston is going full remote as of tomorrow

Wow! Only if the White House could have followed these guidelines?

megynkelly How long before jack blocks ?

megynkelly But the politics during the closing weeks of a huge election are trying to convince us otherwise.

My daughter’s school is on a flex schedule and following CDC protocols. They have not had a ‘superspreader’ event. They have reported werkly infections the last few weeks. Our state is at a 6% infectious rate currently

This article is brought to you by 'Schools'. Please keep sending your children to school, we need the money. We're not spreading the disease, we promise.

So I guess Fairfax County doesn’t exist huh?

Our school has been open for two months. 4 cases to date. No deaths.

One thing the article didn’t discuss was the measures schools are taking. Masks on always, no cafeteria time, lunches in classrooms, no locker use, one way hallways etc. Awesome that this data is found needs to give specifics though.

Not exaggerated. Miscalculated.

It's ALL Exaggerated. Only 1 in 4 of CDC reported numbers (200K) Does CV dominate As Cause of Death. Removal of Databases TOO LATE. The Hand Is Tipped. There's No Hiding. CrimesAgainstHumanity

Exaggerated? No. Appropriately cautious, definitely. What you have to ask yourself is how many kids’ or their family members’ deaths are acceptable if you reopen schools. If zero is your answer, you choose one type of reopening. If more is your answer, you choose another.

SLOTribune KSBY can we get this to LuciaMarUnified ASAP 🙂

Maybe. What side do you want to be on?

BS on this research

Meanwhile University of Michigan students account for 60% of COVID cases in Washtenaw county currently and the health department issued a stay-in-place order for them specifically.

wesyang Buried lede: '[O]ther experts said the US as a whole has made little progress toward..reporting school-associated cases publicly, regularly and consistently. 'We are driving with the headlights off, and we've got kids in the car''

its not the kids its the unions driving this. also defund npr

BUT WE NEED LOCKDOWNS 4EVA - coronabros

GavinNewsom open the schools now.

It has been very clear in Iowa that schools that require masks are not seeing the outbreaks. The students in my kids’ district have really taken the responsibility in stride.

lachlan Coronavirus is out of control at University of Michigan.

Not exaggerated, just unknown. There is still risk and being managed - not 100% risk free, but that's what we have

And yet some schools have had to close promptly after opening. Probably because NO precautions were in place...?

So why did 30 nj schools reopen and immediately close again because of outbreaks?

Bullshit.

Just read that MA schools are going back to elearning bc of spikes in cases. This may be spreading through school or not wanting to risk carrying it to school. Idk

You tell me?

This headline poorly reflects the story content. A better one night be “Safety measures appear to be limiting virus spread in schools.”

Please see: Boston Public Schools.

Teachers, like health care workers, are now expendable? Kids aren’t getting sick so who cares about teachers & staff when there is no testing, no tracing, no PPE.

No

This is depressingly shoddy reporting from NPR. Data indicates that opening schools with tons of safety precautions, most better than in the U.S., is not resulting in “a lot” of transmission. Headline - were fears exaggerated?

We have no nationwide procedure for testing and contact tracing. Comparing us to countries who have these doesn’t make sense. Are we suddenly going to have a procedure in place? Schools will establish contact tracing requirements to families?

YES. We should close bars before we close schools

Is it worth noting that the University of Michigan just shut down the entire campus for being a superspreader site?

Because👏schools👏are👏taking👏precautions👏

My wife's elementary has been open since Sept. using the CDC guidelines. They are still open. 1. Everyone wears masks or faceshield 2. No entry without temp / symptoms check 3. Students with symptoms cannot return without a doctor note clearing them

This was true months ago.

That’s great. It doesn’t make it wrong to proceed with caution when dealing with a virus we know little to nothing about.

You mean what Rand Paul was saying months ago? Weird

They aren't super spreader sites because they're following CDC guidelines.

wow
