Purdue Pharma headquarters stands in downtown Stamford, April 2, 2019 in Stamford, Conn. Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, and its owners, the Sackler family, have faced hundreds of lawsuits for the company's alleged role in the opioid epidemic that has killed more than 200,000 Americans over the past 20 years.Purdue Pharma headquarters stands in downtown Stamford, April 2, 2019 in Stamford, Conn.
But the deal unveiled Wednesday morning, which includes three felony guilty pleas, won't result in company officials or members of the Sackler family, who own Purdue Pharma, serving prison time. However, Justice Department officials say this deal doesn't preclude future criminal prosecutions of individuals involved in Purdue Pharma's opioid marketing practices. They say those separate investigations are ongoing.
The controversial settlement, valued at more than $8.3 billion, would restructure Purdue Pharma, which entered bankruptcy last year. Going forward, the company would operate as a public trust under government control, continuing to manufacture opioid medications. The Justice Department also says much of this settlement will help states and communities, providing them with"extraordinary new resources" for treatment of people suffering addiction.
In a letter sent last week to Attorney General William Barr, 25 state attorneys general urged the Justice Department to"avoid having special ties to an opioid company" that"caused a national crisis."last week insisting any resolution of Purdue Pharma's role in the opioid crisis result in prison time for company owners and executives.
No one goes to jail and the Sackler family pays pennies on the dollar.
Where is the jail time? 8 billion is just a slap on the wrist. How do these corporate companies get away with no jail time. Think of how many lives they’ve destroyed and killed and knew they were doing it. All for the love of greed.
a slap on the fucking wrist
Disgusting. The whole sackler family should be in prison and their ill gotten wealth confiscated.
Where are the prison sentences
Federal officials are equally guilty of allowing this to, go on under the FDA's nose, the DOJ, and HHS!
Chicken feed. They could have broken Purdue's back, and criminally prosecuted the owners. We will.
Every cent of profit from opioids needs to be seized and applied to treatment for people used as pawn by this company. Shameful.
The secrets are the point here. The 2007 settlement was a PR Scheme. What this case should have exposed was deceptive medical marketing, and regulatory capture at our federal agencies. Creating doubt and confusion in the American populace was the real strategy here.
How much money did they make from addicting such a large population to opioids? I’m betting it was more then $8.3 billion. How is this a “penalty?”
So a minimum of 5-9 years in prison for distribution?
470,000 dead over the past 20 years. Imagine if a foreign power had killed these many US citizens!
“But the deal unveiled Wednesday morning, which includes three felony guilty pleas, won't result in company officials or members of the Sackler family, who own Purdue Pharma, serving prison time.” Outrageous.
Purdue Pharma's Sackler family should be in prison for their narcotics' trafficking, fraud, deception, and murder.
This is my understanding.... Pay part of you profit, Then you can continue doing what you want!
'It could also shelter the personal assets of members of the Sackler family from future liability for their role in the opioid crisis.' Of course. BTW, where is Bill Barr?
So what happens to the money?
Send them to prison!
Cheat, lie, beg, borrow, & steal enough money so that once you're caught in all your fraud & thievery you can buy your way out, pay the fine, & go back to business as usual. What a fantastically horrid lesson they're teaching young adults about how to operate in Corporate life.
Why aren't the Sacklers and their ilk in prison?
So we're just going to ignore the system that allowed them to do all of this Okay...
Thanks a lot A$$HOLES now the people that need it can’t get it! I hope you experience some of the pain you have caused others!
/1 That fine is pennies on the dollar coampred to the profits that Purdue booked. It's also pennies on the dollar relative to the $$ that the Sackler family looted from the company before the charges came down. Purdue/Sacklers should be treated like any drug cartel:
Let's put this money right into the Trump campaign! trumpisjesus
Where are the criminal convictions?
Where does the $8.3B end up going?
How much did they make from peddling this drug? I'm guessing it's quite a bit more than 8.3 billion

huge
Corporations are people, until it comes to the death of millions, then its a fine and a slap on the wrist.
Fined? Fined!? The company should be dissolved and the family imprisoned. There has to be an actual cost to this behavior or companies will never stop exploiting our lives for their profits.
DOJPH Who’s going to jail? Someone needs to serve time for this. Obviously, this was not a victimless crime.
They made 30 billion from it
Should have been more honestly
Not good enough, criminal charges needed
I have a handful of friends who would have been overjoyed to hear this, if they hadn't OD'ed and died.
The should go to prison!
