The American Red Cross established an evacuation center for displaced residents at the Westwood Recreation Center. Authorities also were investigating whether the building's smoke alarms were functioning and whether the building had been inspected recently, Scott said.

A fire of this nature in the building of this size it's bothersome. It would seem that a building such as this should be targeted by municipal legislation to require at the very least, sprinkler systems in the escape routes and hallways. I would urge Los Angeles city council...
