THE other evacuees had all been inspected, approved, and taken away to begin their new lives. As I stood there clutching my brother Doug’s hand, I was too young to know it but I was probably hindering our chances of finding a home.

My first shock was having to say grace at meal times and prayers before bed. On our first night, with Mrs Thornton present, Doug formulated the prayer we would say every night for the rest of the war: “Dear God, please bless Mam and Dad and keep them alive until the war is over.”Mr Thornton was strict but a joker too and was well respected locally. Soon we had settled in, calling our hosts “Aunty” and “Uncle”.Their son Hugh was in the RAF and John, aged 12, was a boarder at a local school.

A letter to… my stepdad, who stepped up‘You did something you probably don’t remember, but to me was so kind and so big, I’ll never forget’: the letter you always wanted to write salihughes Both my husband and I have parents who are divorced and are lucky enough to have wonderful step parents. Our children have 4 sets of great grandparents- how lucky are they! Step-parenting how it should be. The problems occur when; you don’t care, don’t include, don’t make the children feel loved, and don’t encourage your partner to remain supportive of the needs of the children they left behind. My husband is a fantastic step Dad, my two children haven't seen their biological Dad since they were 5 &7 (his choice) they are now 31 & 29. Their step Dad has been there for 18 years & they just adore him, he's everything a Dad should be & more & loves them like his own.
