It was billed as the future of air travel, but airlines increasingly saw the jet as too big and inefficient.

Ideal for brexit eers to get them out

Because everyone should shower at 40,000 feet.

Freight...

Because of amazon

Because it was TOO MASSIVE

On the other face... you were right🧡

Such a pity, brilliant legroom and comfort , even in economy

To big and no one wanted to buy it. It's another white elephant.

Shortage of suitable petrol stations

Because busses weren’t meant to fly. Just guessing

Like the Concord, ahead of its time and not favoured by Americans.

Nobody has any money that's why

It’s interesting seeing Boeing outmaneuver Airbus. For a long time it has been the other way around. Sorry to see the A380 go away and obviously for the work force who will be affected. Seems like a really nice plane.

Was always a risky venture but Airbus convinced themselves this was what was needed to dominate long haul travel, how wrong they are.

Launched about 30 years too late.

Maybe because it’s not supersonic?

Smaller aircrafts have proved to be more efficient. Not to mention, not a single US carrier bought an A380. It’ll be interesting to see how they are phased out given that their second-hand market is pretty much nonexistent at the moment. Shame though, such a calm & quiet cabin!

Engineering design failure sabotaged sales. Sharp radius on some Airbus proprietary material wing parts introduced to cut machining costs. Design changed when cracks developed earlier than estimated, parts redesigned & replaced. Sales & confidence plummeted.

Thanks, Opportunity has ended it's mission

Boeing correctly anticipated the market. Airbus took a gamble.

Aviation went in a different direction.

Very interesting article. I didn't know that bigger airplanes tended to be less efficient, it is counterintuitive

They still are a marvel of engineering but with profit margins to protect, quad engine aircraft simply don't fit in today's market outlook. The wise money is them investing in A350.

The usual BBC position that it's a mystery why this taxpayer supported business isn't a world beater. No matter how often civil servants and politicians 'pick winners' and blow billions on their failure the tax funded still thinks that they are immune to market rules

It’s a shame because I had been in it a few times to Bangkok and Sydney. Many airports can’t support it yet but yet this technical marbles is being decommissioned

Shame. It’s the best aircraft in service for long haul. Emirates have nailed it with economy and business class offerings. I’d always pick an A380 over other scheduled aircraft.

When I saw them moving wings from France to Britain it looked problematic, not to mention engineering problems between different shops. Something that big has to come off without a hitch.

Because they got to smart the 747 was and is the Jumbo of the sky’s ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

So comfortable.

If in doubt, blame it on Brexit.

Lack of demand by those wishing to travel with 500+ on one Aeroplane.

BREXIT will get the blame as usual

BBC Propaganda: Why did the Airbus A380 fail? BBC Public Service: Is Airbus being forced by BREXIT to remove its wing factory from Wales? Mueller: Who ordered the Conservative Heavily Infiltrated Manufactured Propaganda unit to hide BREXIT disasters?

I do t know I’m not a technician

Was Chris Grayling in charge?

'Fail' ? The aircraft provides a great option for long haul ops to major hubs. Sure the market does not need 2000 of them like the 320/737 but it is a amazing aircraft .

Go on blame it on brexit you know you want to!

It failed?

It's a French owned company that's why.

Because Airbus for prestige reasons wanted a plane bigger than the 747, and then went looking for data and rationales that would support building the 380.

Grande Blanco Elephanto.

My first A380 flight was from Heathrow to Sydney. Confirming what others have said, the flight was so smooth that it felt for the most part like we were not even airborne. An utter pleasure. Airbus travel flight ✈️

I’m surprised the didn’t blame Brexit

Because it was non viable from the beginning just like CONCORD. Thank god the bloody white elephant being put to death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ha Ha European projects are doomed to fail. Brexit UKIP

Lmfaooooo cause of the crazy cost

Ryanair prices ! Lol, just greedy

There's a list of reasons. Infrastructure, only certain routes available to a plane this large. Flexibility, to fill it means less flights, people like choosing when they fly, not being told when. Perception, small more fuel efficient planes make consumers feel less guilty. sad

Please help

Wrong plane, wrong decade. If they built this in the 80s then it would've survived. Can't take much freight, can't be converted easily to anything other than pax transport. The rise of long range twinjets/narrowbodies has killed hub-to-hub aviation

Just like the EU WTO is the way to go

Simple no one wants big bloody planes the 747 was the best plane ✈️ in the sky

Rubbish news, I remember the documentaries on the first take off. Awesome engineering! Take the positives and make it better, lighter, more efficient etc. Giving up is a bit pathetic.

Because it’s more economical to use more efficient long haul single-deck wide-body twinjet aircraft. They are the future and the likes of the Boeing 747 and A380 will be phased out of service in the coming decades. It’ll be the end of an era.

The plane wasn't a bad idea at the time and was marketed as the saviour of the industry (exaggerated slightly) but looks like a failure because Airbus has so much riding on it. Also, EU Bureaucracy doesn't help give them a competitive edge.

Brexit I suppose

Most comfortable aircraft I have ever been on. Shame but they will be around for some time to come so not a disaster for passengers

lukeyp09

Sad day. Amazing aircraft. A real shame it never succeeded in china. Things might be different.

It was too fat too heavy and too slow to be a Concord 🤷‍♂️

It didn't fail, airliners just changed fashion.

So much for blaming brexit

It needs Red Bull after 29.3

Hands down the best flight I have ever been on,

It never failed. It was a magnificent example of European engineering ingenuity, but not unlike Concorde, the revenue generation wasn't sufficient to justify manufacturing more of them

To big and to long to embark

And you are loving it

The sell it as 'a hotel in the sky', to those crammed down the back it's just another tin can that gets them to their destination. Create these planes and forget those that fly in them. Next

Designed by Homer Simpson and the EU.

It is not long ago ProjectFear was blaming Brexit for the demise of Airbus. I wish you'd make your mind up, what is it: Brexit or the lack of suitable airports around the world?

It's Brexit fault that the Arab states aren't buying the A380 anymore just like the Chinese not buying as many Land Rovers .. blamebrexit 😂

British Rail's APT train was another failure. Tried to emulate the French TGV but couldn't.

Airbus made the bet that air travel will be via hubs, Boeing point-to-point. Simples

Because people don’t like using national hub airports like Heathrow. They’re inconvenient & expensive & people don’t want to use them. The only ones that approve are the monopoly carriers who reduce their costs having a single base. It’s inefficient flying people twice.

Brexit blamed yet?

To get to the other side.

'Boeing's new family of 777s - deliveries of which start in 2020 - which has fewer seats but the same range, more payload, and two fewer engines.' The 777 only ever had two engines. I guess the new one will be very quiet for passengers...

Green tariffs contribute. Costs 10 times more to land them at airports. Same for 747s.

EU and it's big ideas

ERAU ALUMNI

Brilliant for the Environment. Not

Airlines run 380 at a loss because you need full airplanes to make money. Airbus screwed up. It’s 1st through business that pays for the fuel and economy pays the note an Maintenence. Only place the plane works is in Asia. not many airports can handle a jet that weighs this much

It's because the Airlines too tight to lower the prices to fill the seats!

Not one mention of the terrible meal service!

AngelaShilvock 😭

It hasn’t.

Because it’s an airbus

Because Boeing need it to fail? And you're working for the USA now?

It came 40 years after the 747 and wasn't much bigger or better.

Such a shame. With planes, the bigger the better. Many of us hate flying, but the bigger the plane, the safer we feel.

Of course, it made no sense, had to transport parts over roadways to build it. Hardly any airports have the area to service, and when full, its like a small city, who is going to protect you against nut jobs

The Airbus saga is a testimony to Europe´s failure. The plane was a way to unite European countries and every EU leaders was selling it as part of their official visits. Now no one is interested to sell it or force it on other Gulf countries, thus it collapsed, and EU to follow.

It just never took off😜

You can't sell planes and simultaneously place sanctions on potential buyers.

I'm glad. It is by far the most painfully boring aircraft ever built. The novelty wears off before it even leaves the ground. The supposed 'benefits' - space, bars, lounges, shops, even gyms were talked of at one time - are of zero use to most of us. Good riddance.

Was never gonna compete with the massively efficient Dreamliner. Pity..... I loved it.

In the meantime Boeing are expanding in the UK, but MSM won’t tell you that because it’s none EU.

Because America didn't want it

R I P

Because of the £16.3bn in illegal subsidies the EU gave to Airbus that you reported on in May 2018? 🤔

Of course it will be around for some years yet, but this is disappointing news as from a passenger perspective, it’s by far the most comfortable and roomy plane. Enjoyed all my trips, whether in business or with family in economy.

Always full to capacity when I’ve used them to UAE Emirates really good airbus

Remainers will blame brexit.

Beggars belief when it’s the most comfortable passenger plane to fly in, bar none. Boeing 787 may be cheaper for Airlines to operate, but doesn’t come close to comfort of A380. As someone said earlier, it didn’t fail. Airlines simply find flying 2 B787s cheaper than 1 A380.

Because it was a technical nightmare, it was late, it couldn’t land at every airport, it was expensive and big, when growth in airlines was in cheaper, smaller, shorter flights... Ultimately the wrong product for a changing market. No icebergs needed for this Titanic mistake

Infrastructure

I'm guessing you'll eventually blame Brexit

Too big

A380 has dream. But just dream. It’s not real.

Brexit! Obvs, init?

They don’t know how to fly 😁😁

Nice try. The Beluga can't carry the A380s wings. They float them out on barges from Mostyn

It ran out of GAS?

Whose defining “fail”? It flies efficiently, passengers like flying on it, it was just a decade late, now the airlines all want to fly big twins.

Europe go figure are they that stupid

BBCWorld the A380 wings are too big for the Beluga, they are transported by boat

Subsidies

If they can subsidize a plane then they should have free crack

No more planes

Too much capacity, too heavy to land at many airports, too expensive.

Green power

Go Green

Inefficiency. There aren't big enough (re: popular enough to fill the seats) routes to fill the airplane. Therefore the airlines are wasting funds flying such a big plane for such a lesser popular route. This is why the A350 and B787 are gaining popularity

When the president of the zeppelin company was invited to look at the British airship R101, he famously said 'it's very nice, but isn't it a little big' Airbus should have learned from history, just because you can build it, should you?

People want to get places faster. Focus on that; not stuffing as many in as you can. Speed / altitude hasn’t changed significantly in decades.

Fat planes aren’t liked much, just as fat people aren’t a380

The EU illegally subsidised them and now they cost too much?

So glad we are bringing home our British girl in Islamic Britain a council House is waiting & we will help to care for her child she can join the 4000 who have returned

Somehow they didn't learn the lesson from the A340.

Because people in the west are so fat, turned out it wasn't big enough.

It didn't fail, airlines can't afford them

Because it’s ugly

Airbus to halt A380 superjumbo production as sales stallAirbus has blamed weak sales for its decision to scrap production of its A380 superjumbo - the world's largest airliner. Hold on a minute? I've got to design here, possibly about 30 feet longer, a triple-decker, what do you think, it might use a little more gasoline, but think of all the people we can put in there.
