Fuming locals in a picturesque village have had enough of tourists swarming their streets to scale the country's highest peak, leaving chaos in their wake.
Further into the holiday season, there are concerns the problem will escalate, though illicit parking may be tempered once park-and-ride overflow facility becomes available again. Yet, such is the deluge of visitors wanting to climb Yr Wyddfa, or visit Llyn Padarn, it’s prompted renewed calls for an extra park-and-ride facility at Glyn Rhonwy on the outskirts of nearby Llanberis. New roads have been built across this former industrial site and quarry – but it has lain empty and abandoned for years, a graveyard for ambitious yet failed projects ranging from a giant snow dome to an outdoor sports hub and a visitor centre showcasing climate research.
Despite ample public parking in Llanberis, many residential streets still fill up with visitors’ cars. Pictures shared on social media this week showed a recycling lorry blocked by cars, and one resident reported seeing an emergency service vehicle struggling to make headway. “We all know what they’re doing for using the toilet,” she said. “It’s a health hazard for us locals, our animals and our waterways.”
