A terrified family fled their home after an inferno engulfed a Kilwinning battery recycling centre late on Monday night.
When the blaze started, Laura McAulay and her partner were sleeping in the house and their daughter woke them up as she saw flashing lights. "We watched the full thing unfold, more fire engines arrived and lots of police, whilst black smoke was belting from the building. Then at 11pm orange flames came from the top of the building.
Laura came back to her house at 7am the next day for some clothes and later in the afternoon, the family returned to stay at their house. However, residents were still advised to remain at home with windows and doors shut almost 48 hours after the blaze broke out. “The increased activity from 2pm onwards will allow fire crew and partners to gain access to the site to bring the incident to a conclusion.
