School meals: How many children can claim free meals?

The row over extending free school meals over the school holidays has continued into its second week.

But how many pupils can claim free school meals, and which parts of the country have the highest rates?In England, children living in households on income-related benefits are eligible for free school meals, as long as their annual household income does not exceed £7,400 after tax, not including welfare payments.

I’d like to see stories on what councils have done with the £63m allocated to them by the government to tackle these issues. Are they spending it effectively or squandering it. From all these stories of ‘starving children’ it’s the latter - so where’s the outrage and the stories?

The British Government need to start closing down takeaways. The vast majority of them only exist to launder money for international criminals. Not to mention they are filthy and the food is about as healthy as eating a bowl of SHIT.

1.4 million children do not need free meals. There are a small proportion with parents who for various reasons won't feed them. Local authorities are best placed to identify & act in those cases - and they've been given the money to do so. This is a classic bandwagon situation.

Wrong question. The question should be, how many families that can claim free child meals actually need to? Most who can don't have hungry kids.

I remember a chap at my school who received free school meals, because his parents were divorced. He lived in a three bed semi with his mum and his Dad had a five bedroom detached house and drove a new Jag. Life is not always as it seems.

“Why should my taxes go towards feeding vulnerable children” says people happy for their taxes to go towards paint jobs for Buckingham palace and private planes, repairing Big Ben and failed track and trace apps.
