Monday night saw an unprecedented plot twist at New York Fashion Week. Fashion house, Vaquera, took to the runway with Sctn 8, and CDLM at Masonic Hall, for what was likely the city’s first ever 3-part show. The collaboration was, according to the press release, a means of asking "what a show looks like when exclusivity and competition are both challenged and celebrated."
Vaquera’s act “In Loving Memory of New York”, was all oversized ruffles, vermillion sequin cut-off and ballet pumps for men; challenging NYFW's conventional commercial focus from the get-go. In keeping the clothes, models' walks were unconventional, with one model stomping aggressively down the runway, enacting the gait established by casting director/ model Walter Pearce for Vaquera for the brand’s SS19 show last year.
Midway through the proceedings designer and longstanding Vaquera hero André Walker emerged down the red carpet in a baby blue, oversized, Little-Bo-Peep style jumpsuit. More wearable pieces were sporadically introduced via dark denim, négligée style dresses and longline pinstripe trousers. However, in all, the pink taffeta gowns were the highlight; sometimes embellished with rosettes, and one in the shape of a giant sequined heart, wrapped neatly in a bow.
