A mum says her son’s life has been “blown into a million pieces” after he suffered a brain injury and was left unable to feed orally following life-saving treatment.
Zander’s open heart surgery was carried out at Leeds General Infirmary on December 5 2023. A week later on December 12, he was discharged home. “Everything appeared to go well but on December 19 he turned completely blue - despite him receiving a scan at the hospital the day before. “On December 23, Leeds tried to take him off ECMO and removed his cannula - which is the biggest risk during the treatment. He went back into arrhythmia and put him back on, which came with massive risks.
Since then, Zander has been unable to feed orally. “Not only has this left my baby with brain damage, he’s now unable to feed properly and tube feeding really has not worked for him,” Hannah explained. “Last week alone I was in hospital five times and he had five failed NG insertions. “He could have had a happy, really good life. He had the whole world ahead of him, and now his future is so uncertain. How could something that was so straightforward have gone so wrong?”
