A landlady in Lancaster faces planning enforcement action over an unauthorised stage in her historic pub. Claire Tomlinson believes the stage is essential for live music, business, and tourism, but heritage officers recommend its removal.

A landlady at the centre of a conservation row after building a stage in her historic Lancaster pub hopes a compromise can be found to keep live music alive. Claire Tomlinson runs the Grade II-listed John O'Gaunt pub on Market Street, and faces planning enforcement action over an unauthorised stage near its entrance and a stained glass window. She believes the stage is essential for live music , business and tourism. Despite this, heritage officers are recommending the stage should be removed.

Claire has submitted a retrospective planning application, seeking listed building consent to keep the unauthorised stage. But conservation officers believe the stage harms the appearance of the pub’s interior and bow window, and stage activities also risk damaging the window.
