Kilcoo,Defender,Referee Dispute

Kilcoo defender Aaron Branagan denies that the referee dispute had any effect on the players or management ahead of the Down SFC final.

It might have overshadowed their impressive victory over Burren, but Kilcoo defender Aaron Branagan insists the referee dispute ahead of the Down SFC final had nothing to do with the players or the management.

Down issued a statement rebuking Kilcoo for appealing the original appointment and a GAA investigation into the incident is ongoing. Two wins over League champions Carryduff as well as facile wins over Mayobridge, Clonduff and Burren further cemented Kilcoo’s status as the undisputed kingpins of Down football.

“Every year we set ourselves as a target of winning Down. We genuinely never speak about anything past Down,” said Branagan.“Once you have that county medal, you just play it as it happens. You don’t go in with any big expectations - we just train hard and hope for the best. Branagan, the middle sibling of five brothers on the team along with Aidan, Niall, Daryl and Eugene, has also hailed the impact Donegal legend Karl Lacey has had on the Down champions since taking over as Kilcoo manager earlier this year.
