I realise that I sound like a whinging, middle-aged man

For the last 20 years, I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over Britain and across the globe celebrating the very best architecture. That means I spend an enormous amount of time travelling from one location to the next and generally being out and about. The one thing that I’ve noticed over that time is that the world seems to be

It has now been proven that noise pollution adversely affects the lives of millions and millions of people across the planet. The most common health problem is Noise Induced Hearing Loss , but loud noise can also cause stress, sleep disruption, speech interference and high blood pressure. Children who live in very noisy urban areas have been proven to suffer from higher levels of stress as well as impairments in memory, attention level and reading skill.

Then there are trains. Train announcements are important to let us know what the next station is and they are obviously essential if there are any significant delays or changes to your journey, but do we really need to be told to “take all of your personal belongings with you” or “please make sure you have the correct ticket for this train journey”? People still get on the wrong trains and leave personal belongings behind – even with the announcements.and tablets.

I politely asked the couple if they wouldn’t mind turning the volume down or have their kid put on a pair of headphones. Their angry response was “have you ever tried to put headphones on a two-year-old?” I couldn’t believe it. I felt like saying “no, because I wouldn’t have my two-year-old watchingreally is a very serious issue and it’s getting much worse. We have a growing population. The UK population has increased by over three million people in the last 10 years.

Crowds Celebrate Year of the Dragon in Liverpool's China TownThe streets in and around Liverpool's China Town were packed out with crowds celebrating the Year of the Dragon.
