The average sum owed to each of these people amounts to £6250 in money that was owed to them in the first place.

The Department for Work and Pensions is thought to owe £500m in back pay - including to people born before a certain date. It's thought that over 80,000 people across the UK are due this money, mainly married women, widows, and folks over a certain age.

The DWP plans to share an update on their progress in paying back this money by the end of March. This large amount of money also includes anyone aged over 80, no matter if they're married or not. Once the DWP finishes its review, it's believed that the number of people underpaid by the pension system could be much higher, possibly up to 230,000 people, reports the Manchester Evening News.
