The Department for Work and Pensions has said it will give vulnerable households more help to cope with the cost of living crisis. An extra £500 million will be put into the Household Support Fund, which will then be shared by local councils to help people who are finding it hard to pay for everyday things like food and heating.
The DWP confirmed the news as part of the Chancellor's Spring Budget. It said the Household Support Fund is being extended on top of a £104 billion package to help with living costs. The Household Support Fund had been set to finish on March 31. The latest round of funding has shared £842 million among councils across England, including almost £26 million for Birmingham. The city council has offered £200 hardship grants to low-income households and sent out £50 vouchers to pensioners who receive Council Tax Support.
The committee issued a recommendation that said: "Ahead of the next financial year, the Government should better communicate and advertise the fund to make sure that people are aware of its existence. The accessibility of the application process should be improved to enable people who may be disabled, do not speak English, do not have access to the internet, or may struggle to access support during working hours, to apply.
