The promising discovery will raise hopes of improved earlier testing and prevention

We have known for 30 years that inheriting certain genes can increase an individual’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

However, a study has now shown that for those people who carry two copies of a gene called APOE4, the likelihood of going on toThere are three different versions – APOE2, APOE3 and APOE4. Each of us carries two copies of APOE, one inherited from each parent – and this means there are different combinations people can carry.

They added that the test results cannot fully predict who will or won’t develop Alzheimer’s due to other factors that play a role in the disease, such as age and lifestyle. Further research is now under way to understand why the APOE4 gene increases the risk of Alzheimer’s amid hopes this discovery could one day help thousands of people gain an advantage against this disease.
