Been watching the remake and an honest opinion the BBC does what the BBC does best it ruins programmes now lets see what its repeating over christmas

Perhaps there’s a new rabbit character named Snowflake? I read the book aged 9 and it opened my eyes in many ways. Completely wrong to water down (no pun intended) the messages.

this is how stupid things are becoming, its a book leave as such... the PC brigade need to be lined up and shot for ridiculous ideas like these.

It’s not Waterhip Down then - BBC need hitting with a Cricket Bat! They’ll probably feature a rabbit that’s transitioning & some refugees from Dover that integrate into the Warren.

Why is it 'toned-down'?!!!!!

What next Disney version of animal farm?!!! FFS world gone mad

I won't be watching it, the old one is the best one and more about the life of the rabbit

Bbc ruins another classic ints pursuit of social engineering our viw of the natural world

And then our children can grow up thinking the world's a nice, fluffy place.

The original was brutal, I remember watching it as a child and then again as an adult. It wasn’t till I watched it as an adult, That I remembered how upsetting I had found found this as a child. I’m surprise my mum let me watch it LOL

🙄 toned down why are we hiding the truth from future generations

I saw that cartoon movie as a nipper in the ‘70s that bigbold blind bastard rabbit freaked me out!

The next remake will be done by Disney.

One of the best novels written given the PC film version. Glad of the original film

Toned-down? I guess they didn't want to offend the Vegan viewers.

To have more generation snowflakes shy away from reality?

They would pathetic

So haunting, so sad, yet beautiful and a tribute to those facing adversity.

So just take out the heart of the novel then, good idea.

The snowflake version.

You mean the Torygraph welcomed the 'toned-down' version which of course in modern BBC Newspeak means all critics welcome it.

I would like to express my criticism of the watered down version.

Critics read .....censorship the thin end of the wedge - what next re writing the history books ?

It always was toned downfall those rabbits and not one pie

BBC is criticized for tame politicallycorrect version of WatershipDown What a surprise!!! DrWho

Nooooo. Being traumatized by Watership Down in early childhood is an important rite of passage 😉

Watered shit down...

Aw, isn't it nice to tone down stuff so people don't get upset and offended? Being upset and offended by something you don't have to watch must be so tragic. Wonder if these professionally offended dears ever watch the news 😎

Still not watching it.

'Critics welcome 'toned-down' Watership'. Not from what I read. A needless remake, which will be a huge disappointment for fans of the book and first film.

Of course they welcomed it being watered-down. People just haven’t got the stomach to deal with the nastier side of life nowadays.

Pandering to the snowflake generation.

Watership Down is a cautionary tale and very affective in its delivery of man’s stripping of the trace of other animals! It was for me a watershed book that started me on a mindset of protecting animals in general! A watered down version is wrong in my opinion, lost message!!

The original scarred a generation for life

Well the snowflakes will be happy anyway.

Watership Watered Down then

Despite the author’s daughter’s comments, this is not just a story about rabbits. In a similar vein to Animal Farm it uses animals to show the pros and cons with various types of society and that a successful community needs a mix of skills and talents to succeed

If it's not faithful to the book, then perhaps they need to call it something else. The original film was brilliant. Sick and tired of things being done just so it doesn't offend snowflakes. I can only imagine what other boxes they have ticked in the remake

Generation snowflake strikes again.

Will not be watching, I need cheering up not a good cry which is what I do if I watch or read Watership Down.

Ffs

. Doesn't need to be toned down. Quite insulting actually. Richard Adams wrote it that way on purpose, to NOT mollycoddle children.

What chance do our children have in life if we tone everything down to protect them? 🤔 I watched it as a child and it didn’t traumatise me.

Bet Richard Adams wouldn’t have..

...The original animation along with the book will always be a favourite of a lot of people including myself, and whilst the animation was very graphic ....it was needed to tell the story...and it worked..I will always love the original watershipDown

Leave the bloody thing alone it is what it is and has been accepted for decades stop messing with our lives - our history

Go away

I think in this way this cartoon became more depressed..😟 dunno is it good or not..

boring film the first time round whats changed that if anything mmmmm

a really top Novel RichardAdams

In a new form of censorship you mean

Is this just to keep the pc brigade and snowflakes happy? Probably!!!!!

Really are we now enter f the era of the supersnowflake?

I thought the whole point was violent and bloodthirsty rabbits.

Loved the 70's BBC Radio adaptation, a time when you had to carry a transistor radio with you, or you'd miss it... because back then 'On demand' only referred to producing your TV licence when the detector vans came calling.

If we wouldn’t be such over-sensitive fuckwits nowadays, who feel offended about every freaking thing, we wouldn’t have to tone anything down.

Reality needs toned down not a few rabbits..

Never seen the original, going to be brave and watch this one

'Toned down' and terrible CGI rabbits; doesn't sound encouraging

Watership Clown? I don’t know whether it’s the same without children being traumatised.

Pathetic

because it's not proper animation it's put together with a gizmo it's not Ghibli

I’ll skip this just because of the word “toned-down” in the description. It’s perfect just the way it was.

sj87d Blatantly means they've taken out the best bits... Needs a 15 version.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Most of the Pixaresque films I've seem tend to merge together, but I will *never* forget the original Watership Down animation. Possibly my first exposure to genuine dark themes.

If Watership Down doesn't traumatise you, then it's not Watership Down.

It should be faithful to the book and film. It doesn't need toning down.

Watership Down, BBC One, review: jerky rabbits, toned-down violence, but acres of emotional biteIf you can’t hear Bright Eyes without picturing blood-soaked fields and bunny Armageddon, that means you're familiar with the 1978 film of Watership Down. 😄 soft twats. anitathetweeter I am still traumatised by the original. My wife does the jumping rabbits in the sky thing when she wants to make me sad. Not for children? Fudamentally stupid wasted opportunity ....

Watership Down should be about death and destruction, not fluffy rabbits | Stephanie MerrittI loved the 1978 film as a child, even though it terrified me, says the author Stephanie Merritt But think feelings may be hurt!! Watership Down review – CGI rabbits can't save this Christmas turkeyThe 1970s cartoon traumatised generations of children, but the new version is tame, drab and deeply unsatisfying. What, really, was the point? I hate rabbit stew ? What was the point.... I keep asking the same question about the Guardian. This should have been in 3 long parts not 2. Too much chopped out of book (a brilliant book) in my opinion.

How my grandfather created Watership Down, one of the darkest children's books ever writtenMy grandfather, Richard Adams, commonly listed as his hobbies English literature, music, chess, beer and shove-ha’penny, bird-song, folk-song and country walking. As a child I found the film disturbing For those of us who grew up in the wilds, it was never 'dark', but brutally and soulfully honest. If only there were more like it! If you found Watership Down disturbing, whatever you do, do not watch The Plague Dogs. I would recommend it if you think you can handle it.
