A longstanding Nottingham comedy club has confirmed plans to relocate to a historic city centre site. The Glee Club has applied for permission to carry out works at a building on Thurland Street which most recently was home to Roxy Ball Room.
Plans submitted to Nottingham City Council on April 15 now confirm The Glee Club's intention to move to Thurland Street. Roxy Ball Room left the building in January, with a new venue set to open this summer under the Roxy Lanes brand. The company said at the time that the closure would not entail any job losses as staff could transfer to its second Nottingham site at The Cornerhouse.
The building is thought to have been built between 1849 and 1851 and was originally used as a large corn exchange, with more recent uses having included operating as a concert venue known as The Clinton Rooms and as an Irish bar named O'Reilly's. The planning documents add: "Whilst traces of the original trading hall can be recognised at the upper level, the ground floor has been divided and closed off for necessary services, bars, kitchens and toilets.
