The government has been accused of a “catastrophic” error after it accidentally slashed the benefits of almost 120,000 vulnerable people for up to five years,

A parliamentary ombudsman is demanding that ministers compensate those affected by the wrongful cut in their benefits, which it said had had a “devastating” impact on their lives.
