Cummins supports larger squads for flexibility.England’s struggles highlight cricket’s unpredictability. In the lead-up to the highly anticipated clash between Australia and England in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, Australian skipper Pat Cummins has raised a crucial issue in international cricket. Cummins expressed his support for expanding the squad sizes in global tournaments, emphasizing the need for flexibility, especially in long-duration events like the World Cup.
Cummins highlighted the potential challenges of a lengthy tournament, stating, “To be honest, it’s a two-month tournament. You wouldn’t want to be in a position where, say, a team like New Zealand has had some injuries and, luckily, they’ve been able to hold someone like Kane in the squad. But if suddenly you had to rule him out – I think that wouldn’t be good for cricket or a World Cup.
Cummins acknowledged the challenges of one-day cricket, saying, “One-day cricket, more than any other format, you have injuries. It’s high intensity, and games are close together. So, we always knew there was going to be a certain amount of attrition.”
