Hospitals and crematoriums have been overwhelmed across the country.

China has eased up on their Covid-19 restrictions and testing requirements, causing a spike in infections that health experts fear will increase the risk of dangerous mutations in the coronavirus. — AFP

While the country's National Health Commission has stopped issuing daily case numbers, officials in several cities estimate that hundreds of thousands of people have been infected in recent weeks. With the virus now able to circulate among nearly one-fifth of the world's population – almost all of whom lack immunity from previous infection and many of whom remain unvaccinated – other nations and experts fear China will become fertile ground for new vviral ariants.

Bruno Lina, a virology professor at France's Lyon University, told the La Croix newspaper this week that China could become a"potential breeding ground for the virus". The lack of transparent data from China – particularly about viral genomic sequencing – is making it"increasingly difficult for public health officials to ensure that they will be able to identify any potential new variants and take prompt measures to reduce the spread", US officials said on Dec 27 .

More than 130 Omicron viral sublineages have been newly detected in China over the last three months, he told journalists.

PAS urges govt to temporarily bar China arrivals amid Covid-19 surgeParty info chief says govt should monitor the situation first. Government knows what to do!! The problem with this (actually no problem for those who 'collect' from the government sitting at home) the problem for others is putting food on the table for their children..taking care of the elderly...etc etc. and it is not just Chinese Nationals affected by the restrictions This makes sense..more so than temperature tests for other tourists coming from countries where covid is under control (NOT LIKE CHINA). Temperature tests are perceived as a quick $$$ for quarantine hotels. Western (vaccinated tourists) will go elsewhere to spend $ we need here.
