KOTA KINABALU: An environmental impact assessment should be carried out for any development planned along the city’s scenic Likas Bay, says Sabah Environmental Protection Association .
Its president Alexander Yee said they are concerned over plans to build a theme park under a proposed multibillion-ringgit Jesselton New City project that will also include a skytrain. “They must have an EIA for the project that involves Likas Bay for the city’s major natural asset along its coastline,” he said, adding that previous concerns about reclamation of Likas Bay affecting the city’s idyllic tourist islands should be studied for the EIA.
However, Yee urged the state government to retain the previous Barisan Nasional government’s 2017 policy of barring further development along Likas Bay. “Under the Coastal Management Guidelines, the Barisan government had said there will be no reclamation unless it is for the strengthening and management of the coastline in Kota Kinabalu.“We emphasise the importance of conducting the EIA and making public its findings,” he added.
