MELAKA: Twelve men from two dredging vessels off the coast here has been detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for illegal encroachment.

The vessels which were mining sand were intercepted at about four nautical miles ff the coast of Tanjung Keling at midnight on Tuesday .

Acting Melaka and Negri Sembilan MMEA director Maritime Commander Azman Samsudin said the crew failed to produce their domestic shipping licence and permit to carry out dredging in Malaysian waters. He said the detained crew were 10 China nationals, one Filipino and an Indonesian and were aged between 61 and 24.

Azman said the crew also failed to produce valid documents from the Malaysian authorities granting the vessels the permission to extract marine sand from Melaka and Negri Sembilan waters. He said the vessels were ordered to berth at a jetty here while prosecutors from the agency investigated the case under the Continental Shelf Act 1966 2009.
