Budget2020 explained: Everything you need to know about how the Budget will affect you and your pocket Ireland

A massive fund to prepare for Brexit, a carbon tax hike and yet another rise in cigarette prices were just some of the main points in Budget 2020.He said: "The budget I am announcing today is designed to protect recent progress in our economy.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe announced the €6 jump per tonne, meaning fuel prices will rise by roughly 2c per tank while refilling a car, priced at €1.20 for a regular 60 litre tank from midnight.Social welfare The payment for lone parents has risen to €15 while those receiving the living alone allowance will get a €5 increase in their payment. And the Christmas bonus will be paid as normal to those in receipt of social welfare payments and pensions in December.

The medical card income threshold for those over 70 has been increased by 50 for a single person or €150 for a couple per week. Support for the anticipated surge in E-cars will be seen, including doubling the number of public charging points. Fianna Fail’s finance spokesman Michael McGrath has said that this Budget will be the last his party allows to pass.

However, the AA warned that the increase alone will do little to encourage commuters to leave the car at home on its own and government must now follow through on plans to invest in sustainable transport, particularly in rural areas. "Investing in public transport infrastructure, LUAS-like systems across our main cities, quality cycle lanes, all these measures would do far more to get people out of the car than a tax increase ever will.”The Simon Community has claimed that Budget 2020 has seen the housing crisis eclipsed by a possible Brexit crisis.
