Garbage Piling Up and Activities Locked Out as Whitby Municipal Worker Strike ContinuesResidents in Whitby continue to suffer with garbage piling up and kids locked out of activities at recreation centres and arenas as the municipal worker strike continues. The proposed deal includes significant benefit improvements and a 9.5 per cent wage increase over the next three years. The sticking point in negotiations is changes to non-standard hours of work for a limited number of existing staff (nine), and the town wants to implement more flexibility in the scheduling of new hires or staff who move to a new role. The town says most existing employees would be grandfathered in on those changes and not be impacted. There appears to be misinformation among some striking workers who believe their hours will be changed under the new contact, which the town says won’t happen. “Right now, CUPE Local 53 effectively has full control over the schedules of Town staff who deliver swim programs, maintain arenas, collect waste, and plow roads,” read a statement from Whitby Chief Administrative Officer Matt Gaskell
