SYDNEY, N.S. — It’s time for the final group of shops, bars and restaurants on Charlotte Street to endure several

“The accessibility is very important. We have a lot of folks who come in with wheelchairs, or moms and dads with strollers. They need that accessible option at all times in our building.”Third and final phase of Charlotte Street redesign in Sydney begins MondayAlong with the access arrangement, a section of Wentworth Street — which is usually public parking — has been reserved for YMCA visitors and drop-offs.

Lasting about four-and-a-half months, this year’s redevelopment phase should be shorter than last year’s duration. CBRM communications advisor Jenna MacQueen said that’s because this phase doesn’t include underground water utility work like previous street sections needed. A street closed sign and fencing on the section of Charlotte Street running by the Nova Scotia Community College and Daniel's Alehouse and Eatery. Daniel's owner Danny Ellis said access to his pub is limited during the current phase of the street's redevelopment, but he and CBRM are still looking for ways to improve those circumstances during the construction.

He said sidewalks are a main barrier, with the section between Falmouth Street and the bar closed off for NSCC construction. A small path through there has been opened up, but Ellis said the still-rough section could be dangerous for some pedestrians to navigate.“It’s a problem that comes right on the heels of COVID,” Ellis told the Cape Breton Post. “We just went through the toughest three years I’ve ever had in the hospitality industry and then bang, right into Charlotte Street redevelopment.
