Colin Stratton asked his son to do him a final favour — to pull the trigger on a rifle he was holding to his own head, after the Victorian health system 'failed him'.

At the time of his death, Mr Stratton was suffering from several medical conditions that his family and the defence counsel for Glenn said were "adversely" affecting his quality of life.

Mr Stratton's daughter, Donna, told the court that he could not garden anymore, had lost his sense of taste, robbing him of his love of good wine and good food, and was losing feeling in his feet and fingers. "You were placed in an unenviable position. You pulled the trigger out of love and respect for his wishes.

Unhappy with the response that it would take about two weeks to get the process going, he said he wanted something that would kill him that day as his "whole body had given up". He asked his son to get the gun and a bullet, but Glenn protested repeatedly, telling his father that the small bullet used for shooting rabbits would not work."I'm doing it today, with or without your help," his father replied.

This story had me in tears. This cannot happen. I have signed up as a member of Dying With Dignity and implore others to do the same

mjrowland68 Glenn Stratton is a hero.

mjrowland68 Good lord!....what a horrific situation to have to be involved in, my heart screams in pain for this son and his poor dying father and I hope I could ever be so strong if I was ever put into such a terrible, terrible pit of love and despair 😲😭😭😭😭

Still don’t believe the laws are working well enough for people who’re ready n want it sooner. When you’re in agony, a day feels like a month. Safeguards are very important but too much red tape n ineffective safeguards just doesn’t serve it’s purpose.Genuine cases need help fast

how hard a decision would that be - a mercy killing would be impossible - why don't they let people die in dignity?

Another example as to why Euthanasia is so important.

Marijuana could have helped too , or maybe chemotherapy.

Can we make assisted dying legal already, or are we just going to keep forcing people into situations like this?
