The giant retailer’s social licence credentials and corporate governance disciplines were tested and came up wanting. | OPINION Woolworths DanMurphy's NT

Woolworths has just had its ‘Juukan Gorge’ moment. The moment when its social licence credentials and corporate governance disciplines have been tested and come up wanting.

Yet having pushed the project for four years, during which there were repeated warnings of health and social threat to the indigenous community, the retailer has exposed its own deficiencies in balancing profit and proper corporate citizenship. Without that elevation of concern about corporate Australia’s treatment of traditional owners, Woolworths may not have felt the same level of scrutiny.

The report was publicly released ahead of a shareholder meeting next week to approve the demerger of its Endeavour liquor business.

Woolworths and NT government blasted in damning review of Darwin Dan Murphy's proposalA review of the controversial push to set up a liquor outlet in Darwin has found Woolworths failed to understand that alcohol is viewed by many Indigenous people as 'a demon that leaves destruction in its wake'. Indigenous Australians like to drink. It's racist for liquor shops not to be able to cater to Indigenous demand simply because of the completely baseless - and I may say - racist stereotype that Indigenous Australians become raving alcoholics when given easy access to liquor. Somehow NT seems to have regrettable people in government, no matter which party I don't see the problem it's not like it was going to be the only place to buy grog in Darwin. 🤦‍♂️

‘Fundamentally failed’: Independent review slams Woolworths over Darwin Dan Murphy’s storeWoolworths failed to consider the negative effects its now-axed store would have had on the city’s Aboriginal community and put commercial benefits first, independent report finds | domp domp Oh please. woolworths is the largest owner of parasitic poker machines in Oz, as if they ever cared about any community. They make the volunteers in the community work harder by spreading the damage all over Australia. domp Just out of curiosity, who did this report? Because the same argument can be made for EVERY licensed premises in Australia!? Alcohol can have negative effects on some members of the community, be they aboriginal or not. Alcoholism is not racist? Why would you be? domp It's not like they built it outside the gates of a remote dry community. It's in suburban Darwin. People shouldn't be allowed to stop others buying a wide selection of wine cheaply just because some people are alcoholics. Maybe they should move to a dry community?
