A review of the controversial push to set up a liquor outlet in Darwin has found Woolworths failed to understand that alcohol is viewed by many Indigenous people as 'a demon that leaves destruction in its wake'.

"Had it done so, it would have understood how a Dan Murphy's — symbolic as it is of the success and attractiveness of alcohol for the majority — might be seen as another nail in the coffin of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples distressed and dying from alcohol abuse."

In addition to those concerns, the panel noted the "negative impact" opening the store could have had on Woolworths Group and its reputation. The panel also took aim at the NT government's "unsatisfactory" legislative amendments that were designed to fast-track the decision-making process, but which it said ultimately did not constitute good public policy.

In a statement, Woolworths Group said it had since surrendered the liquor licence to the NT government.

Victory for aboriginal advancement. Well done.

The left are so progressive, they think a bottle shop cannot be built near an indigenous community because the indigenous people aren’t smart enough to make sensible decisions around drinking Bigotry of low expectations

I don't see the problem it's not like it was going to be the only place to buy grog in Darwin. 🤦‍♂️

Undoubtedly amongst the worst episodes of Government malfeasance in the history of self rule. Gunner drove it all and failed, again. Thankfully

Somehow NT seems to have regrettable people in government, no matter which party

Indigenous Australians like to drink. It's racist for liquor shops not to be able to cater to Indigenous demand simply because of the completely baseless - and I may say - racist stereotype that Indigenous Australians become raving alcoholics when given easy access to liquor.
