The Victorian Opposition has blasted the government after another apparent hotel quarantine breach that is believed to have led to the highly infectious Delta variant escaping into the community.

It emerged last week that the variant had been found within the community, amid a snap lockdown and restrictions in the state.

Authorities confirmed on Tuesday a genomic link had been identified between a returned traveller who stayed in Melbourne hotel quarantine and the family infected with the variant, but the exact cause of the transmission remains unknown. In a heated Question Time on Tuesday, the government maintained there were no “obvious breaches” within hotel quarantine.“How did this happen, how did the government let Covid, the Delta variant, get into our community,” Mr O’Brien asked.Acting Premier James Merlino said there were no known breaches but there was always a risk of the virus entering into the community through hotel quarantine.

Mr Merlino said there was always a risk of Covid leaking into the community through hotel quarantine. “The point we’ve been making consistently, speaker, is that we need a purpose-built quarantine facility to deal with highest risk individuals,” Mr Merlino shouted over the yelling chamber. The Party Games newsletter

West Melbourne outbreak not a result of hotel quarantine breach | Sky News AustraliaVictoria Acting Police Minister Danny Pearson says there is no evidence a breach in hotel quarantine led to the introduction of the highly infectious Delta variant of COVID-19 into the community. \n\nAlthough genomic sequencing had linked the West Melbourne cluster to the Delta strain of the virus, health authorities, up until now, were unsure as to source of the virus.\n\nA genomic link for current West Melbourne cluster has now been established with health officials revealing the variant was introduced via a returned overseas traveller last month. \n\nAuthorities believe the Delta strain originated from a traveller who arrived in Melbourne from Sri Lanka on May 8 and returned a positive result on the same day. \n\nThe man was subsequently transferred from the Novotel Ibis quarantine hotel to the Holiday Inn health hotel the following day and was release from quarantine on May 23. \n\nAll 24 passengers and crew onboard the flight as well as the 360 hotel quarantine staff have returned negative tests for the virus. \n\nResidents at both the Novotel Ibis and Holiday Inn hotels have also tested negative. \n\nMr Pearson says investigations into how the virus was transmitted are ongoing. \n\n“While we are continuing to review CCTV and incident logs again, I can confirm that so far there is no reported or obvious breach of infection prevention control protocols or anything else that would indicate a transmission has happened inside the hotel,” he said. DannyPearsonMP And Jenny and the kids said what would you do if we were ill and locked up 3,000Km from the mainland. Does it make a difference if we have dark skin.? Are you a racist Daddy?
