An Australia Day event has taken a tragic turn after a woman has reportedly died during a lamington-eating competition on Sunday.

The 60-year-old woman is believed to have suffered a seizure after choking on the iconic Australian treat during celebrations in the southern Queensland city of Hervey Bay.

Footage of the competition shows people trying to eat as many lamingtons and pies as possible. She was given CPR and taken to Hervey Bay Hospital but could not be revived. Image: Getty
