OPINION: The worry now is whether Mr Andrews’ thumping win will embolden Anthony Albanese to revive the old Labor faith in government intervention at the national level.

Daniel Andrews’ crushing victory in Saturday’s Victorian election is a stunning endorsement of Australia’s most left wing, most economically interventionist and most indebted government, let alone of the premier who imposed the most punishing COVID-19 lockdowns outside China.– is that they will encourage all those within the labour movement who seek to impose an anti-business agenda of higher spending, increased taxes, higher debt and more regulation.

Liberal victories in the leafy inner-Melbourne seats of Kew and Hawthorn – which form part of the federal electorate of Kooyong lost to a teal independent by former treasurer Josh Frydenberg in May – might salvage something from the wreckage. But unless the Liberals can find a way to reconnect with what used to be its professional middle-class base it will remain out of power in Victoria – and perhaps federally – for a long time.

The Andrews government uses identity politics to wedge moderate and conservative Liberals on cultural issues. It has abandoned fiscal prudence and embraced big borrowing and spending on infrastructure. It does this in partnership with the thuggish and law-breaking CFMEU and its Victorian construction boss, John Setka, whose continued industrial and political influence in Victoria Mr Andrews disgracefully harbours.

After locking up Victoria’s gas reserves, Mr Andrews blames “obscene” profits for high power prices and encourages federal Labor to impose big stick export controls and price caps on LNG exports.

The government can't intervene at the national power, when I have the tax there; because it is the stock market smell, in Sydney, that is my cost of business, and it is not going to be anything to do with their fathers' smell and money they want for their daughters.

Wouldn’t it be best to have a couple of weeks mourning the vote for Dan. Then you can get back back to Labor bashing 🌹

The great majority of people in Vic knew staying home was hard but necessary. The election result just proved that. You're entitled to your opinion but it's one shared by the cookers, gov'ts the South of the US where mortality rates are 4× as high and economies faired no better.

You seem to have forgotten the Morrison/Freidenberg led LNP's unprecedented deficits and debt? With their socialism for corporates like Harvey Norman. What's happened to the Fin Review? Seem like we're reading the conservative right LNP newsletter.

The LNP crisis is that it's controlled by the conservative right but the great majority of its lost voters are around the middle. Those voters want nothing to do with the far right groups - the cookers - who the LNP courted. In reality they're a very small % of the electorate.

Having such a pi$$weak & largely irrelevant fringe opposition is the real danger but the onus is purely on the opposition to distance itself from extremists, nutters & propagandists masquerading as journalists & get back to centre right politics, economics & social policy.

LyndaFrench19 Can’t stop cookers cooking up a conspiracy, can you?

That is supposed to be an Opinion piece from a leading paper? What reality are you existing in? AFR used to be a sensible read.

Obviously written by someone with NFI!

The sea change in thinking in the electorate has already happened. Voters actually do want government intervention.

hope so
