It is a cause of angst for many parents — the worry that their children will face pressure to try alcohol and illicit drugs. But parents can make more of a difference than they think.

"One possibility is that the brain has been impacted," Ms Lees says.

"Any level of drinking during pregnancy was associated with emotional and behavioural problems in the children," she says. "You can't look inside someone's brain and determine whether they are going to use drugs or not," she says. White matter is the cabling, or connectivity, of the brain. The frontal part of the brain is responsible for executive functions and impulse control, and the limbic system of the brain is involved in behavioural and emotional responses, like fight or flight. White matter is what connects them all."The connectivity of these tracks between the frontal part of the brain and the limbic system play a role in risk-taking," Ms Debenham explains.

He was 17. He was not a child.

The lack of will to educate people on the affects of alcohol is criminal, sure makes some people feel braver even makes some into bigger bullies.Aftermath is in the main ignored, abuse is acknowledged but treated with varying degrees of indifference, long term brain damage ?

Defund the ABC having someone writing this crap.

All the kids I have given beer to have gated it. So it's not that bad.

Dad let me try Swanny D as a joke when I was 5. 'Tastes like pink marshmallows'. I threw up everywhere after a sip. Mum wasn't impressed. Didn't touch the stuff again til I was 21. Idk. Seems like a great aversion tactic to me 🤙🤙👍👍

Sounds like absolutely no one commenting on this tweet read the article.

Complete Bullshit.

This article is highly insensitive and offensive to people with Central and Eastern European heritage, or those who dink XXXX, Budweiser or similar children’s beer

Are most of these responses denial?

Let's forced them to get injected with a dangerous vaccine with no long term satey data instead.

I tried beer at 13 and hated it so I stayed away from it for years! Making up for it now though 😂 🍻

You’re meant to be reporting news not nanny messaging for fucks sake

If you are a crap parent, your children will end up crap. Nothing to do with smoking or drinking as some of the best people in the world smoke & drink. Look at Hitler, he was a vegetarian 🤷🏻‍♂️Your diet or drinking doesn’t make you good or bad 👍🏻

...or why you shouldn't litter, and normalise it in a photo.

As my parents (and extended family) were European I always find these articles amusing. This article seems to reflect the American relationship with alcohol which is very neurotic and overly puritan.

for god's sake...the french introduce wine early and you don't see the six a clock swill behaviour over there....

Introducing children to alcohol isn’t wise or in any way good - The left keep introducing things constantly that involves changing children - maybe common sense should prevail - Alcohol 18 ( or better not) teach them healthier things - don’t encourage bad harmful things

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck off

In European countries like France and Italy social family drinking with teens is normal and binge drinking there isn’t half the issue it’s here in Australia.

I find this hard to believe... My father often gave me 'just a taste' - an ounce, ounce and a half here and there... And I liked the taste! But it didn't make me WANT it... I had my first full beer at 24yo. And to this day, I don't bring it home. Bars only... and quite rarely.

What rubbish, talk about a misleading headline.

You shouldn't let your kid have beer. How are you going to feel if he or her see this as approval to drink. Drinking for an under age person is like poison on their brain

What rubbish!!! Have a look at Europe. Kids drink with there families at dinner. Having a sip of beer isn’t hurting anyone.

This is some top drawer parent shaming!

Is this guy legit blaming his parents for his alcoholism because he had his first drink at 17? I'm a millennial and that's the most millennial thing ever.

Didn't bother reading the article but I can safely assume there's something about racism in there as well....

Meanwhile, children of the '70s who grew up sips of KB, are doing just fine.
