Voters want to ban politicians from spamming them with texts and calls

Politicians should be banned from bombarding people with mobile phone messages and automated phone calls, most Australians say, after millions of voters received texts from the United Australia Party backed by mining magnate Clive Palmer.

The nation’s peak health regulator has warned the UAP and its only federal MP, former Liberal backbencher Craig Kelly,about vaccines that went to about 14 million phones. While only 3 per cent said they clicked on the link, the response rate suggests hundreds of thousands of people viewed a campaign website listing hundreds of deaths.The UAP message said “Australian Government’s COVID-19 Vaccines Adverse Events Report” and linked to a party website that used the logo of the Therapeutic Goods Agency and the Commonwealth coat of arms.

When voters were asked if parties should be stopped from making automated phone calls known as robocalls, 80 per cent agreed and only 6 per disagreed. The Liberal Party and the Australian Labor Party have argued for many years the exemptions from privacy and other laws are needed to ensure freedom of political communication, allowing those seeking or holding office to get their messages to voters.
