New Zealand Rugby confirmed they are considering a proposal to play an historic cross-code clash between the All Blacks and the Kangaroos but key figures fear the showdown may fall over due to news leaking before a deal was struck.

Lonergan, who put on the Jeff Horn-Manny Pacquaio fight in Brisbane in 2017, has been pitching a proposal for a clash between the world's best league and union sides for several years.

That will prove problematic as Kangaroos players would, under annual leave entitlements, then not return to preseason training until January 30. Wallabies players look on to the New Zealand All Blacks Haka during the Bledisloe Cup match between the New Zealand All Blacks and the Australian Wallabies at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, Saturday, August 17, 2019.

Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan told the Herald he was not concerned about the All Blacks taking on the "other" Australian team.
