Using cutting-edge technology, researchers are extracting the age-old scents of books and manuscripts dating back to the 13th century. So, what does the Magna Carta smell like?

The first time Roger Michel smelled the Magna Carta, it didn't make much of an impression on him.had just inhaled a range of other important books, including an incense-heavy central African gospel and the oldest known text of the poem Iliad, on a Hawara papyrus.

Mr Michel gave his nostrils a rest over lunch, and when he returned to give the text a second sniff, he experienced something totally different. "It is like — and it should be, it's the Magna Carta — it's like a fine wine, it's like the most expensive Bordeaux on the wine list."

I reckon this is why e-readers will never push real books out. Books are tactile, and smell good. It’s the whole experience thing of curling up with a good book.
