For 145 years, performers have stood on the stage of Ballarat's Her Majesty's Theatre not perfectly upright, but with a slight tilt towards the audience.

They date back to the Middle AgesDesigned to emulate English theatres of the Middle Ages, the stage at mainland Australia's oldest operating theatre has a three-degree rake.

"Given that the majority of theatres these days are a flat stage with the auditorium brought up to stage height." "It was difficult for people to see, so the purpose of raking the stage was to make sure people could see what they were looking at." The rake in the stage also opens up the audience to experience the patterns and formations in the choreography which would not have been obvious if viewed on a flat surface."You can see a dance number on a flat floor, but you possibly need to be in a raked seat yourself to be able to see it properly."'A dog's breakfast'
