The NSW resources regulator has charged Whitehaven Coal over 16 alleged breaches of the mining laws involving exploration and operations that could cost the miner millions of dollars.

Whitehaven is accused of failing to comply with conditions for both exploration and mining activities at its coal mine in northern NSW.Eight of the allegations relate to an exploration licence, EL6243, which the regulator suspended last August after the issues were identified, the statement said. The company is accused of failing to comply with conditions of the licence.
