What it's like for the women of Canberra's jail, forced to live 'right next to' male inmates

The Alexander Maconochie Centre has always been unusual in housing men and women in the same facility, but the dedicated women's cottages were built with clear separation in mind.The moves were made because of surging numbers of both female and male prisoners — the women's numbers outstripped the capacity of the cottages, and the number of men was booming too.

"But now that we're in a block, amongst the boys' blocks, we can see them from our bedrooms, we can communicate through the window, our yards are right next to each other.Separation of male and female prisoners is more than just good practice, experts have argued — in a smaller city like Canberra, many prisoners know each other from the outside world.Jane said some women were so afraid of being near the men, they refused to leave the block.

ACT inspector of custodial services Neil McAllister released a damning report in February that found the cell blocks were unsuitable for women and the use of it was at odds with the AMC's stated philosophy as a 'human rights-compliant' jail. She said women tended to have better outcomes in minimum-security environments that bear a resemblance to ordinary life outside jail.

All you did was expose how easy women have it compared to the men in prison. Sounds like they are experiencing a taste of equality.

Male attitude in this regard hasn't moved on since convict times. But I must say, why the difference? why do men have to be treated like animals.

Gone were amenities like separated bathrooms, private courtyards and kitchens that is good to know, a prison is not a home. They would not be in the situation that they are in, if they choose to not break the law

How did the ABC become so feminist? Instead of “women of Canberra’s jail” it should be “female inmates of Canberra’s jail! Abc should hire more men and women who are not feminists! When will ItaButtrose fix this mess?

I can understand why it’s not a good idea to have men and women in close proximity to each other, I was surprised at the different standards of detention. What’s the reasoning behind this?

Who cares, they’re criminals.

Well this almost sounds like sexism from the ABC, if i go by their rules anyway.
