Breaking: Mohamed Noor said he 'knew in an instant I was wrong' and apologised to Justine Ruszczyk Damond's family, just moments before a judge sentenced him to prison

Noor was convicted in April of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the July 2017 death of Damond, a 40-year-old dual citizen of the US and Australia. Noor shot Damond when she approached his squad car in the alley behind her home.

Ahmed Nur carried a sign at the courthouse that had the words "Black, Muslim, Immigrant and Guilty" with boxes checked next to each word. He said he doubted a white officer would have been treated the same in Noor's situation. "I have lived with this and I will continue to live with this," Noor said. "I caused this tragedy and it is my burden. I wish though that I could relieve that burden others feel from the loss that I caused. I cannot, and that is a troubling reality for me."

Tom Plunkett, Noor's attorney, asked Quaintance for a sentence as lenient as probation. He described Noor's desire to become a police officer in part to repay a debt he felt to the country that took him in long ago as a refugee. Noor testified during his trial that a loud bang on the squad car startled him and his partner, and that he saw a woman at his partner's window raising her arm. He said he fired to protect his partner's life. But prosecutors criticised Noor for shooting without seeing a weapon or Damond's hands, and disputed whether either of them really heard a bang.

"Justine's death has left me incomplete - it is as if I have lost a limb or a leg," he said in the statement. "I have lost my daughter, I have lost those private conversations over tea."

Is this guy the only one that contributed to the death of this wonderful person? What about the system and their training that make these guys criminals.? How many other people are killed by the police?

If the victim had been black, then Officer Noor would still be a free man...

No issue with sentence but it would be good to see the black victims of white cops get the same justice.

. Outside the courthouse...

he should prove real popular in prison - where he belongs

Pretty sure if he was a cop from the foreign white European-Anglo-Christian ruling class of Americans after British-America he would have been rewarded!

tragic for Ruszczyk Damond's family....tragic for Noor......the real fault lies in a gun culture and shithouse training of cops

It should of been 100 years 😡

Former US cop jailed over Australian woman’s deathA former US police officer has been jailed over the death of an unarmed Australian woman who had been trying to report a crime when he shot her dead. good enough result, at least he is in jail Glad he received the maximum, does not bring Justine back, but at least it's a bit of punishment and a deterrent to other trigger happy cops. Still seems a bit light to me. No doubt there will be an appeal. They played the race card and he only got 8 years.
