The World Health Organisation has not yet declared a pandemic but the suspected coronavirus outbreaks in various countries has people concerned. 9News

Tracy Grimshaw spoke to infectious disease and vaccines expert Professor Raina MacIntyre about what the warnings mean for Australians.Increasingly, we hear a pandemic is inevitable and that we should all prepare to be exposed to coronavirus, do you agree with that?hasn't declared one yet. They are waiting to see evidence of sustained transmission into WHO regions.

At the moment, the only evidence of sustained transmission is in Southeast Asia. But we are seeing these outbreaks in Italy, Iran and so on, which are concerning. Are we doing enough to stop it? We can still fly into and out of infected countries. Surely, if we were fair dinkum, we wouldn't be doing that right now?I think Australia has taken pretty stringent measures in terms of travel bans and quarantine, up to now.

It's really important, particularly for people with diseases, people 65 years and over, that they get vaccinated as soon as possible.
