Australia will be at risk of greater economic pain if it withdraws from the global community over fears of a coronavirus pandemic, Trade Minister Simon Birmingham warns.

He said the outbreak reinforced the need for closer trade ties with India, where he was due to visit in January but cancelled because of the bushfires. He will make a trip to the world's largest democracy later this year.India is the fast-growing large economy in the world and among Australia's top-tier trading partners, with two-way trade worth $30 billion in 2019.

He used his speech to the Asia Society, which included senior representatives of the Australian and Indian business community, to advocate for closer trading relationships between the two nations. "But it is through looking outwards, particularly by supporting global markets and international trade, that the world has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty."While in India, Senator Birmingham will encourage the country to join the RCEP trade pact.

Senator Birmingham said he respected India's decision not to join but hoped it would change its mind.Irrespective, Senator Birmingham said Australia would continue to work with India in the bid of expanding trade, which has previously been held back by the protectionist nature of the South Asian nation.
