A bona fide institution in western Sydney, Lebanese chicken eatery El Jannah is proving even more popular in Newtown | michaelkoziol

In the city's chaotic food scene, so-called institutions tend to favour the top end. Tetsuya's. Quay. Icebergs. And they're alright. But let's face it - you'd rather go to El Jannah.

"For us Sydney is Sydney, we don't care if it is north or west," Mr Estephan says out the back of his new King Street shop. "It looks like we have a very good name here, people are loving us."Credit:That's patently true at lunchtime on Friday, the store's third day in operation, when queues are out the door and down the footpath. Mr Estephan says he's going through about 500 chickens each day in Newtown, with more than 800 daily orders.

"It's not frozen. That's why you see the line and that's why orders take about 10 minutes to finish. When you order we just cook straight away for you. It's a very hard process but it's working for us." For years an unofficial line has carved through the city, running diagonally from Richmond in the north-west to Sydney Airport in the east. It was dubbed the Red Rooster Line, with all the chain's outlets located on the left or western side. The same could be said for El Jannah, until now.

Who are the Mexican drug cartels and why are they so deadly? They may be glamorous on TV, but for Mexicans, drug cartels are a terrifying reality. Who are the cartels? Where do they operate? And how deadly are they? Here, we explain. They operate because we refuse to legalise drugs. The P.M of Mexico should strike deal with the U.S and allow boots on the ground under a deal that protects absolutely Mexican sovereignty. It can be done if the U.S pulls it head in and decides to serve and not presume superiority and rid that besieged country of this scourge. Psst - they are not glamorous on TV.
