The preparations of many athletes for Tokyo 2020 have been thrown into disarray by the coronavirus, which is threatening the Olympics.

While Pound said a decision would need to be made by May, Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates, who is heading the IOC’s coordination committee for the 2020 Games, stressed “there is no call at the moment".

"The IOC at that end is continuing to liaise with the World Health Organisation to get the latest advice from them and then in Tokyo the municipal government and organising committee are working together to ensure that this doesn’t run away from them.” Australia’s rowers had also planned to compete in Varese in northern Italy at a World Cup regatta in early May and use the Australian Institute of Sport training centre in Italy but AOC chief executive Matt Carroll said the rowers could be switching their pre-Olympics training to New Zealand.

Sailor Jason Waterhouse, who won silver in Rio de Janiero in 2016, also said he wasn’t concerning himself with the crisis.
