Bellwether’s Sue Bell hopes her new Special Blend will encourage others to “celebrate our love of the land by recognising the 65,000 years of cultural connection”.

Last year, to celebrate her 50th birthday, Coonawarra winemaker Sue Bell walked the Larapinta Trail in central Australia with her daughter, Maggie.

“It was such a treat,” says Bell. “The mixture of time in this ancient landscape and those women had me in a very responsive mood for the incredible artwork on display.” Sue Bell taking cellar door visitors through a tasting of her premium museum wines at Bellwether cellar door. As well as being a celebration of the vintage, for Bell, who has Aboriginal heritage, this new wine was also an affirmation of her life. She was born in Mount Isa and adopted at birth. She grew up in a loving family and has been accepted by Aboriginal people throughout her life. “At school,” she says, “the other Aboriginal kids always assumed I was one of them.

“Normally, I think voting should be a personal, private decision,” she says. “But this is different. This is about justice. It makes me angry that this process was initiated under a Liberal government and put forward in the spirit of bipartisanship, but that so many people have been fed so much disinformation since then. I think an injustice has been done.”
