Magistrate fails to see the funny side of 'staged' gold heist described by lawyers as a 'comedy of errors'

Although their pockets were weighed down with gold, the customers who wandered into the Melbourne Gold Company in April this year were buoyed by the hope that they were about to get a fair price for their precious metals. The $3.2 million armed robbery was the third largest in Victoria's historyThe last thing they expected to hear was a disembodied voice telling them not to be alarmed, because there had been a heist — the third largest in Victoria's history, to be precise.

It's alleged Karl Kachami and his co-accused Daniel Ede robbed the Melbourne Gold Company of $3.2 million in April. But his co-accused, Mr Ede, 37, had his bail application scuppered, with the court hearing he had made repeated denials that he was involved. "The planning appeared to be sophisticated, including the secretion of cash and the bullion in a very remote location which was only known to both of them, but which could only be accessed on locked private property," he said.

During the robbery, Mr Ede was seen on security footage loading bundles of cash and gold bullion onto a trolley Mr Kachami was pushing.
